Unreal & Inviting
CALEB and ELSIE are court ordered to attend substance abuse support meetings. At one of those meetings the two meet and become friendly. After one support meeting, they get drunk and have sex. From this one sexual encounter Elsie becomes pregnant. Elsie has concealed both the pregnancy and her intention to abort the baby from Caleb. The film begins the day Elsie is scheduled to have an abortion. Waiting outside of the community center where the support groups meet, for her friend Lydia to escort her to carry out the abortion – she instead encounters Caleb. When Lydia fails to arrive and seeing Caleb smoking in front of the community center, the flood gates of emotion open and against her initial intentions, Elsie reveals all to him. A contentious conversation ensues: Caleb is unyieldingly against abortion while Elsie is casual in her desire to terminate the pregnancy. Later, BRUNO, the only man Elsie ever loved, returns after a five-month absence. When Bruno learns about the unwanted pregnancy, he lashes out at both Caleb and Elsie (even though Caleb and Elsie are no longer lovers or friends) and a violent episode takes place. Once at the jail – where Bruno and Caleb are being held – the truth about Caleb’s other life is revealed.
